What to Know About Self Service Car Washes

There is a real appeal about a bucket of suds, a soft sponge, and a gleaming, freshly cleaned car. Getting hands on with the mass of metal and chrome and plastic is one thing, but sometimes circumstances say a coin operated car wash is needed.

There is a real appeal about a bucket of suds, a soft sponge, and a gleaming, freshly cleaned car. Getting hands on with the mass of metal and chrome and plastic is one thing, but sometimes circumstances say a coin operated car wash is needed.

Although they seem convenient, with self-sudsing brushes, a ready supply of detergent, and even vacuums, there is a higher possibility of causing damage to the car’s paint and body work than if washing at home.

The detergents are a heavy duty general purpose mix, designed to work with small cars, medium cars, large cars and four wheel drives. It’s also made to work with diesel soot encrusted small trucks and the like. As such, it’s potentially more likely to affect the paint work than the gentler mixes found in products such as Nu Finish car wash.

Then there are the washing mechanisms themselves. These are generally heavy and unwieldy thick braided mop style heads, attached to a hose that feeds the detergents, rinsing fluids, and possibly even a form of liquid polish.

Because they’re a multi-purpose item the heads will have the residue from countless mixes of washes and rinses, plus the heavy threads used are more prone to trapping the small and big particles of dirt, mud, and anything else.

This is when using Nu Finish at home, in more controllable conditions, will pay more dividends. A pre-wash rinse from the top of the car down, fresh water with just the right amount of Nu Finish, and smaller thread cloths of microfibre construction, and your car will be far safer and look a lot cleaner.
